Devices and microphone quality

Run NoiseGuard on two devices logged into this account (for example a laptop with a USB microphone indoors and a phone on the balcony). Every device syncs to the same evidence file; episodes captured by two devices at the same moment are marked as corroborated in the report.

Placement and setup checklist (maximum evidentiary quality)
  1. Indoor reference device in the bedroom, microphone 1.2 to 1.5 m above the floor, at least 0.5 m from walls and 1 m from the window; doors and windows closed (this is the position the regulation prescribes for indoor measurement).
  2. USB or interface microphone on a stand, not on the bed or desk surface; cardioid capsule pointed toward the wall facing the source; foam windscreen on.
  3. Interface or OS input: fixed gain, 48 kHz, mono, all "enhancements" off (AGC, noise suppression, echo cancellation, voice isolation). On macOS check Audio MIDI Setup; on Windows disable "audio enhancements" for the device; on iPhone Safari keep the phone still and plugged in.
  4. Set gain so quiet room noise reads around -70 to -60 dBFS and the loudest bark stays below -6 dBFS. Never change gain after calibration: the profile is bound to the chain hash.
  5. Second device (phone) on the balcony or at the window facing the source, in a windscreen, mains powered, screen lock disabled, same account. It serves as an independent witness and shows the level is higher toward the source.
  6. Calibrate the indoor chain once with a class 2 sound level meter placed 10 cm from the capsule: three or more stable levels spread over at least 15 dB, 8 seconds each.
  7. Keep both devices on a UPS or charger, Wi-Fi stable, browser tab in the foreground on the laptop; NoiseGuard reconnects but gaps weaken continuity.

Measurement qualification

Reference microphone calibration

Use an independent sound level meter beside this microphone. NoiseGuard will compare three or more stable reference levels and reject inconsistent, clipped, or processed microphone chains. Device speaker playback alone is not an absolute calibration reference.
